2002 Logo Contest

2002 Festival logo by Joanne Baker.
For the past twelve years, Joanne Baker has been working as a registered nurse in Maternal, Child Health, and Parent Education at Beverly Hospital. After the birth of her second child, she realized the need for more creativity in her life and she decided to return to her first passion—drawing. She took courses in computer art and monotype at Massachusetts College of Art and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and courses in painting in oil and watercolor with Boston artist Gema Phillips. As she completed a Graphic Design certificate course at North Shore Community College, her instructor, Liz Visco, encouraged her to enter the Marblehead Festival of Arts logo contest.
Joanne enjoys logo design, which allows her to incorporate color and shape into pure forms of communication. She has done illustration and package design for musicians, and she loves to collaborate with other artists. She feels the challenge of graphic art is how best to express ideas or concepts in beautiful and meaningful ways. Working with women and children reminds her how under represented women are in the art world, and of the importance for them to express their stories through visual art. Her own journey has begun with her freelance company, Cygnet Designs, in Hamilton, where she also lives. Inspiration is drawn from her husband, son, and daughter; her two Dalmations, Snickers and Nestle; and her cat. She plans to delve further into graphic arts and explore other media, including metalworks and jewelry design.
