Plein air painting is a French expression for painting outdoors. These fresh, often rapid works can capture the essence of a scene and the weather with a unique charm, unlike the more careful studies produced in a studio. Come see artists at work, capturing the scenic beauty of Marblehead on canvas and paper.
On Thursday, July 3, artists met for breakfast at Marblehead Arts Association, then ventured to their selected locations to paint the town. Their works were then exhibited during the Festival, July 4–6, and remained on exhibit at Marblehead Arts Association through July 31.
Chairpersons: Barbara Hanapole
Committee: Nancy Ferguson, Jane Giedraitis, Leslie Downie
Judge: Robert W. Duffy
An avid plein air painter, Robert Duffy hails from Worcester, where he initially studied art and graduated from the Worcester Art Museum, followed by a Bachelor of Arts from Clark University, a Masters in Education from Worcester State College, and thirty-three years of teaching at the Worcester North High School. A member of the New England Watercolor Society, artist member of Academic Artists, Oil Painters of America, and the New England Fly Tyers, his work has been included in the Atlantic Salmon Journal, "Pool Portraits," by Dean Clark, Winter ’86; and in American Artist Magazine, "A Conversation with Robert Duffy," by Charles Movalli, Nov. ’87. Duffy has exhibited his work throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and has won many prestigious awards, including—earlier this year—The Samuel Armour Memorial Award (Landscape) at Academic Artists. He is one of the outstanding participants in the annual fresh paint auction of the Marblehead Harbor Rotary Club.
