2004 Senior Student Art Scholarship
Scholarship winner Alex Harvey and Festival President Maggie Smist
at the Awards Ceremony, July 1, 2004
The Scholarship Committee is pleased to award the 19th Annual Marblehead
Festival of Arts Scholarship to Alex Harvey. Alex will be attending
Syracuse University and will spend one year at the Bristol Old Vic
Theatre in England. He will major in Drama and plans to pursue a
career in acting and directing.
Alex has had a passion for acting since he was very young. Enamored
with the British theatre, Shakespeare has played a large role in
his life and is an essential part of who he is as an actor. Alex
has spent time during his summers at the Royal Academy of Dramatic
Art in London and at the Globe Theatre.
A 2004 graduate of Marblehead High School, Alex directed Chekhov's The Seagull,
the first student-led production at Marblehead High School. Having seen a production of this play at the Public
Theatre’s New York Shakespeare Festival, Alex was determined
to bring it to the High School stage. He has won prestigious dramatic
awards for both stage and film in New England, and he has been a
state and national finalist in numerous Shakespeare competitions.
Keri Ellis Cahill, Artistic Director of The Rebel Shakespeare Company,
views Alex as one of the most "shockingly" gifted students
with whom she has worked. She notes that his interests range widely
and his sensitivity and brilliance follow him in everything he does.
The Festival welcomes Alex to the family and wishes him great success
in all his artistic pursuits.
