The Steven Spungin Flamenco Group — Traditional Flamenco

Photo of the Steven Spungin Flamenco Group.

Steven Spungin received a Bachelor of Music degree with high honors from the renowned jazz college, Berklee College of Music, in 1991. His musical journey has taken him to Europe and three tours throughout eastern United States. He has performed at the Great Woods Center for Performing Arts and has traveled to the international music festival, Mar é de Augoste, in Portugal. Steven has studied guitar with legends Pat Metheny, Michael Hedges, and Pierre Bensusan. He currently lives in Marblehead, where he performs and teaches. Steven will be performing with his Flamenco group, and will present a variety of traditional Flamenco song and dance forms with multicultural influences. He will be accompanied by the rich rhythms of percussionist Brian O’Neill, along with the passion and grace of singer/dancer Yvonne LaLira. His style is based in Flamenco, and has hints of Western European Classical, Celtic, South American, Cuban, Mexican, and Middle Eastern influences. In addition to his eclectic tastes, he also is a master improvisationalist and a virtuoso guitarist. His performances are articulate and sensitive — a perfect balance between the head and the heart, combining the spontaneity of jazz, the technique of classical, the melodies of international folk, and the rhythms of dance. We encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to see this gifted local performer set the mood for our annual Film Festival to follow at dusk!  For more on Steven Spungin, visit www.spungin.tv.

Maeve — Pop Folk Jazz
Photo of Maeve.
Maeve is a collaboration of three individual singer-songwriters — Courtney Reid, Rachel Taylor, and Rollyn Zoubek — blending together their own distinct voices and styles to create a cohesive sound, rich with harmony reminiscent of the Indigo Girls and Crosby, Stills, and Nash. The local trio honed their unique sound through the time-tested underground tradition of busking in the train stations of Boston. The resultant original songs are a serendipitous blend of acoustic pop, jazz, and folk with Americana touches. Make your way to Crocker Park on the holiday afternoon to see this truly wonderful band. For more on Maeve, visit www.maevemusic.com.

Say When — Pop Rock
Photo of Say When.
Say When is Maxwell Latif on lead vocals, Zack Starikov on lead guitar, Andy Del Cid, on rhythm guitar, Bjarki Meitil on bass, and Ignasi Corella on drums. Originally formed in the halls of Northeastern University, Say When had been performing their take on rock and roll in bars and clubs throughout New England to do one thing: “Bring the Party!” Taking little pieces from the greats of the past and fusing it with the modern sounds of today, Say When has created music that reminds you of the music you love. Their sound draws from the epic rock of U2, to the "Let's party" attitude of Van Halen. Say When has recently recorded a 4 song demo CD that’s getting regular airplay on local New England Radio Stations, including WBCN, where they were named the "Buzzcut Local Band" twice in the past few months! They have also won the second round of the Emergenza International Battle of the Bands, and at this writing, are competing at the U.S. Finals in Boston! Tell the kids to get to Crocker Park to see this great young band. For more info, or to hear cuts of their CD online, visit www.saywhenmusic.com.

The Julie Dougherty Band
Photo of Julie Dougherty.
Julie Dougherty has been a staple of the local music scene since the mid-sixties, starting with her sister, Kathy, performing folk music at coffeehouses in the Boston area, including opening several times for the Kingston Trio in the 70s. Through the years, Julie has traveled much of the country singing Irish music, original Folk-Rock music, and Country-Rock music. She has made several trips to Nashville, placing two original songs with major publishing firms in the early 90s, but her roots, as always, are still here in New England! Julie hosted a highly acclaimed song writing, cable TV show, called Songwriters In The Round, for three years, featuring many fine songwriters, including Noel Paul Stookey, Chris Smither, and Al Kooper.  Julie also wrote and performed in the great, original funk band, the Boston Horns. Julie is currently promoting her incredible new CD, The Unraveling, and will be performing with Mark Longo on keyboards, Mike Rush on bass, Jack Howard on drums, Greg Tawa on guitar, Ken Field on sax & flute, Jack Osoro on percussion, and Erin Brown and Terry Osoro on backing vocals. Editor’s Note: The day after the Marblehead Reporter printed a story confirming cancellation of fireworks in town this year, we received a strange message on voice mail from someone named "Duke," asking us to call him. Could it be? The only Duke we knew was the legendary and mysterious front man for the band who "rocked" the Festival way back in 1974, Duke & The Drivers!  Well, it actually was the "Duke," who explained how "bummed out" he was that we weren’t having fireworks in Marblehead this year. He explained that he was "putting the band back together, bigger and better than ever." Then he started rambling on, something about "checking our bucket" and asking if he and the band could come out to help make the night explode with good time party music, mumbling something about, "What you got sure is good to me." Well, we won’t look a "gift" Duke in the mouth (or something like that), and when the Duke calls, how could we say anything but, "Bring on the party!!" With that said...

8:00 till they kick us out!
Duke & The Drivers — “Check Your Bucket” - It ‘s Party Time!
Photo of Duke & The Drivers.
"Before there was the Blues Brothers, there was Duke and the Drivers"
     The Boston Herald

Duke And The Drivers have attained legendary stature and been honored by discerning audiences, critics, and some of the world's greatest rockers alike as a party band for all times! From their inception, The Drivers have been known for their explosive rock-and-roll, funky rhythm-and-blues, and the outrageous showmanship featuring a 'shadow' of the always heard yet never seen Duke, Earthquake Morton, Cadillac Jack, Sammy Deluxe, Mad Mississippi Buffalo, and Rhinestone Mudflaps III. As a band and individually, Duke And The Drivers are possessed by the searing, yet at times subtle, power of classic, R&B music. Formed (circa) 1970 in the venerable Boston Rock Scene, and while under the The Duke's inspired leadership, The Drivers honed their craft, playing virtually every college and roadhouse in New England, as well as many points beyond. Recording two earlier albums, Cruisin' and Rollin' On, plus several more singles with ABC Records, Duke And The Drivers have shared venues coast to coast with rock icons, Aerosmith, B.B. King, Deep Purple, J. Geils, ZZ Top, and The Eagles. Duke and The Drivers continue to quicken the pulse of their growing, pancultural, and multigenerational audience.

Garnering new devotees at each performance and listening opportunity, The Duke was compelled to release The Drivers' 2003 Live CD on Dukedom Records, Check Your Bucket, and to rally The Drivers for their unprecedented Check Your Bucket Tour & Revue to sold out venues across the region!

The Duke's extended family, The Drivers, are now an 11 piece band of guest performers and recording artists, including highly acclaimed studio musicians and side men associated with greats like Buddy Guy, The Four Tops, and Peter Wolf. Additionally, the CD and the band feature the incomparable Uptown Horns. The Duke's assembled cast of characters also includes some of the band's favorite rock raconteurs, including the biological son and nephew of Sam Deluxe as guest guitarist, The Petulant Prince, and G2 on drums.

As the Duke told us, “Fireworks...we don’t need no stinking fireworks...we’ll just Servitude to the Multitude through Amplitude, son...we’ll be cooking our own version of fireworks — Mojo-Works!”

On the 30th anniversary of Duke & The Drivers' first Festival performance (in 1974), just this once, don’t worry about missing the fireworks, just "Check your Bucket” and bring the whole family for this (once again) in a lifetime chance to see the mythical Duke and The Drivers! For more on the Duke and his Drivers, visit www.dukeandthedrivers.com.
