Afternoon: Local Artists Showcase
Every afternoon —Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday—the Performing Arts Committee will showcase local artists on the big stage at Crocker Park. We encourage you to stop by to support these artists who are performing for the show and (certainly) not for the bucks!

Purple Koolaid—Rock
Purple Koolaid is Ivan Kureav on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, John Geraghty on bass guitar, Kevin Leahy on lead and rhythm guitar, Jeff Edwards on lead and rhythm guitar, and Brian Leahy on drums. These Marblehead High Students have been together for about a year and a half, playing and creating their unique sound. There’s no one genre to place Purple Koolaid, they cross over with a jazzy-rock-pop feel, performing with a diverse jamming style that is all their own. Tell the kids, Purple Koolaid is jammin’ today at Crocker!

Merrimack Valley Rounders—Traditional Blue Grass, Country
Taking their name from the region of the Bay State that is home to their founding members, The Merrimack Valley Rounders are a 5-piece, mostly acoustic string band, steeped in the rich musical tradition of Bill Monroe, Jimmy Martin, and Flatt & Scruggs. Not content to limit themselves solely to the stylistic strictures of bluegrass music, the band is as much at home dipping into the country canon of Hank Williams and Merle Haggard as they are interpreting the Beatles and the blues.
Comprised of former Johnson Mountain Boy, Eddie D'Zmura on guitar, John Giunta on banjo, Jim Grossi on mandolin, local luthier Steve Pierce on dobro, and bassist Jon Stone, the group plays with an enthusiasm and drive that belies the fact that they have only come together as a performing unit very recently. This is good ‘ol time music and you’ll find yourself smiling and tappin’ your toes along with the boys.

The Berklee College of Music Night
Berklee College of Music is known worldwide as the epicenter of contemporary music education. It’s our pleasure to present not only the music that comes out of Berklee, but a sampling of how students are nurtured and prepared for their craft. While Berklee students need the talent to be accepted, it’s the community and educational environment that gives them the foundation to maximize that talent. While most college students are joining a fraternity or playing a sport, Berklee students are in “Harmony”, “Ear Training” or “Ensemble” class. Imagine entering a classroom with each member of the class playing a different instrument in a band and as soon as you sit down in your chair, the professor hands out that day’s lesson (maybe a “chart” of a “standard”) and with a “one, two, three, four,” the class is off and playing the song. Our Berklee College of Music Night features two world-class jazz bands and offers a unique sampling of why Berklee has become a world-class institution, right in our own back yard!

The Alex Terrier Quartet—Jazz
 Alex Terrier was born in 1980 in Paris, France. At age 8, he studied classical piano and harmony, and he gave his first recitals the following year. At age 12, he discovered the saxophone and jazz. Studying saxophone with Benoit Collinet and Patrice Quentin, Alex won 4th prize in the European Saxophone Competition in 1996.
In 1999, Alex graduated from the Lycee de Sevres with a Brevet de Technicien des Metiers de la Musique. Leading his own quintet with trombone player Mickael Joussein, he performed in major Parisian jazz clubs. In 2001, he won the first edition of the Sunside Awards.
After his Diplome de Fin d’Etudes, he studied with Guillaume Roy (viola) and Thierry de Micheaux (piano) at the National School of Music in Evry. Conscious of the importance of knowing where things are coming from, to know where they might go, Alex intensively studied music history and wrote a thesis about the influence of jazz upon German composers during the third Reich.
After performing professionally in France for two years, Alex obtained the Lavoisier Scholarship (delivered by the French Government) and a Scholarship from the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He moved to Boston in 2004 to complete a dual Degree in Performance and Jazz Composition. He also studied percussion with Jamey Haddad. In 2005, Berklee College of Music awarded Alex the Joseph Viola Scholarship (for outstanding performance) and the Herb Pomeroy Award for his twelve-tone composition, LHeautontimoroumenos.
In 2006, Alex became a recording artist for JRecords. He performs with and composes for the three best bands of the College: the Berklee Jazz Concert Orchestra, the Rainbow Big Band, and the Rainbow All Stars. Alex’s first album, Stop Requested, includes some of his latest compositions and also older pieces. The music reflects the period during which Alex has been living in USA.
Alex Terrier is currently working on a new project in collaboration with the composer-conductor, Tibor Pusztai, from Budapest. Together, they are composing an entire repertoire for string quartet and saxophone. Through his teaching—both private lessons and master classes—he spreads the jazz spirit and the importance of music as a spiritual way to improve oneself as a human being. The "Be-Bop" Guitars—Jazz
Headlining our evening of Berklee Jazz are The "Be-Bop" Guitars, an all-faculty group lead by Professor of Guitar, John Baboian. This 10-piece, all-star band is comprised of respected Berklee faculty with stellar, established, and active careers in the jazz world. The "Be-Bop" Guitars features five of the time-honored, guitar faculty playing specialized arrangements that show the diversity of the instrument and of the performers. The combined total teaching years of all members of this ensemble is more than 200 years! The faculty members in The "Be-Bop" Guitars represent a "who's who" in the international world of jazz education, and they have published educational books that have had a profound effect on the way that jazz is studied worldwide. Their resumes include work with everyone from Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Herbie Hancock, Paquito D' Rivera, and Jaco Pastorius to Connie Francis, Lou Rawls, Sammy Davis Jr. and The Boston Pops. Jazz Revelation Records
Formed in the spring of 2003, and made possible by a grant funded by the college, Jazz Revelation Records is Berklee College of Music's jazz record label. Under the founding management of Paul Im, and later Linda Little and Sarah Huo, JR Records successfully released two albums: Rebirth and Two. Under the direction of current president Collin Walker, the label has released its third effort, Ars Nova. JR's purpose is to foster the development and exposure of the most talented jazz musicians at Berklee.
