Film Festival History
Marblehead Festival of Arts, Inc. is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization that has been producing an annual, summer arts festival since 1963. During its first 34 years, the Festival sponsored several film & video workshops. In 1996, it incorporated an annual Film Festival as part of the summer Festival of Arts.
Initially, the Film Festival was held indoors at the Marblehead/Swampscott YMCA Screening Room, then the Warwick Cinema, and then the Nelson Aldrich Performing Arts Center at Marblehead High School. Beginning in 2001, the Film Festival has been held out-of-doors, weather permitting, in the evening at Crocker Park, overlooking Marblehead’s famed harbor.
In 2004, the Film Festival Committee added a Winter Film Festival, held in February. The winter program is an encore presentation of many films from the preceding summer program, and it often includes additional films not previously shown due to time constraints of the summer program. The winter screenings were first held in historic Abbot Hall. In 2007, the winter program was moved to the Marblehead Little Theatre.
In 2005, the Marblehead Festival of Arts established a Film Festival People’s Choice Award, where the members of the audience are encouraged to vote for their favorite films.
